about

This song is completely tied to a movie that exists in my head. Albatrosses can live up to fifty years and can fly about 10,000 miles in a single journey. They are really incredible. I was picturing an old albatross floating and getting sleepy (they sleep in the air too) above the ocean and clouds on a moonlit night. Very calming. Then she gets swallowed up by the ocean as she drifts a little too low in her slumber. It's about the soft calmness of death.

I started writing this the first day we went into the studio in the early winter, 2018. I had the chord progression and I think the lyrics just came over the course of the session. We tracked it on one of the last days. I took it home and did the horn arrangements and added some extra flourishes. It's really the reason the studio is my favourite place to be. I wonder how many more songs I'd have under my belt if I spent 365 days in a studio, y'know? It was nice to be able to just directly track an idea I had. I remember Graham in the control room kinda directing Steve through his headphones about where he wanted him to come in, like a conductor sorta. It was a wonderful moment...

lyrics

Albatross in the dead of night
She’s fast asleep
Floating
It’s getting easier
To play it softer now
A little softer now

She sleeps a little longer than before
Yeah, but those were different times
It’s getting easier
To play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now

Play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now

Fly a little slower now
Drift a little lower down
Waves come crashing over you
Pull you into the deep, dark blue
Where they play it softer now
A little softer now
Softer now
A little softer now
Softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now
Play it softer now
A little softer now
