about

Leaning on you is a love song - an inversion of Bill Withers' 'Lean On Me.' Lean on me and I'll lean on you when I need to. Relationships need balance, like back to back guitar solos.

There's also a "fight" element to this song. Like the narrator is experiencing their first love, a very intense and maybe teenage love with melodramatic actions like scratching their love's name into their skin. There is definitely heavy teen-drama influence in the imagery.

Pissing someone's name in the snow felt distinctly Canadian and real to me too... I think the title and that line came along together and the rest of the song flowed from there - like urine into snow.

lyrics

I pissed your name in the snow
‘Cause I want you to know
That I love you so much
I got all the friends I need in you
When you’re cut I bleed for you
You prop me up and take a load off

And I’m leaning on you
Lean in
I’m leaning on you
Lean in

You scratched my name across your arm
When it heals there will be a scar
Screaming in the rain, on a beach at night
Can’t look ahead and you can’t look back
Some days are grey some days are black
You wish there was a colour for the way you feel

When I’m leaning on you
Lean in
I’m leaning on you
Lean in
I’ll be leaning on you
Lean in
Leaning on you
Lean in

The burning thunder burst into a flame
The bowered fortress fell into the rain

I pissed your name in the snow
‘Cause I want you to know
That I love you so much

And I’m leaning on you
Lean in
Leaning on you
Lean in
I’m leaning on you
Lean in
Leaning on you
Lean in
