about

Noodle Soup is one of those songs where the meaning comes after other things evaporate over time - then you see what was there all along. It's about numbness and depression. Begging for a feeling - any feeling - to come along. I'm definitely singing to myself here. Taking care of myself and bringing soup etc... It's about being outside of life - under a grey, even sky and things like love and happiness feel unreal, like a distant memory.

This may be the first ever Born Ruffians co-write. It goes back to when Steve left the band to go back to school (in 2013 I think). Mitch and I were unsure how exactly to proceed but we knew we wanted to keep the band going and we had a lot of material we were working with. We were renting a little garage space with a studio and inviting different people to come and jam. We had Daniel Woodhead and Maddy Wilde from Moon King come by (Maddy now has a fantastic band called Rapport, Daniel is releasing amazing music under Moon King still). Maddy sang Hey You and Daniel wrote Noodle Soup with us.

Daniel sat behind the drums and we banged out the structure and everything. We bounced lyrics back and forth too so it was very much a collaborative effort... it was great. I remember Daniel really encouraging those initial ideas and not wanting to revise them too much. Certain lines just kept coming out and I didn't know if they made sense but he was really digging them.

lyrics

Appear to me this feeling
Appear to me now, feeling
Appear to me for a while

I see you’re looking pretty awful
I picked you up some noodle soup
Well there’s an emptiness inside yourself
Who, when you’re sick, takes care of you
And now you’ve fallen in, too

Appear to me this feeling
Appear to me now, feeling
Appear to me for a while

The summer’s almost gone
The kids are having fun
Sweat-dreaming in the sun
Asleep with nothing on
I want nothing at all
I want nothing at all

I see you’re looking pretty awful
Dirty dishes surrounding you
And there’s that noodle hanging off your lip
I’d suck it up if I were you

Appear to me this feeling
Appear to me now, feeling
Appear to me for a while

The summer’s almost gone
The kids come later on
Sweat-dreaming in the sun
Asleep with nothing on
I want nothing at all
I want nothing at all

Was it memory?
Standing in ecstasy next to me, in love
Thought I’d set you free
Because you were meant to be not with me
But oh, don’t go taking me at my word
