about

I got really stoned and wrote this song in a sort of fugue state. All three parts.

The lyrics were a free form writing before going to sleep one night. The next day I decided to smoke some weed - I never get stoned to write because it usually just incapacitates me. Anyways... I went through about an hour of panic attacks (it felt like ten lifetimes). I remember crying and shaking on the bed (this is why I don't smoke weed very often) and having hallucinatory visions - one of my partner as an old woman smiling and laughing. It was all really kind of beautiful and scary and fun and frightening all at the same time. After the fear subsided I was left with an overall sense of calm. Almost like I had expelled darkness and fear from my soul, at least temporarily. "And I wonder how that felt today" was in reference to this experience.

Still super stoned though, I couldn't understand or fathom how my computer worked or how I could ever record a song so I started by just recording voice memos in my phone of the guitar parts and vocal melodies. As the drugs wore off and I started getting my faculties back I began recording and building the song. I used the lyrics I had written the night before. It really felt like the "self" in that moment had reached back in time to the previous night to write the song lyrics. Time felt accessible and non linear (weed is crazy these days). It was a good day.

The final recording is note for note the same as the demo. We tried to recreate it pretty precisely in the studio. Graham Walsh really helped to expand the fidelity and the mix. We ended up using quite a bit of my original recording though.

We always thought it sounded like an album opener. So here it is.

lyrics

You may make it out of here
Sitting on a little sentimental saddle
Riding on a wave of psychic radiation
Clopping through a field of fungus and mud cakes
Chewing on a stack of newspapers
They’re wet and soggy and the ink does run
Learning in the school of woolly courage
Low placement in the rankings
It’s a come back

Catch a cat's eye
Middle of the morning
Catch a raven's eye
Middle of the night
Catch a snake eye
Bitten with no warning cry
Catch a needle eye
Middle of nowhere

Catch a cat's eye
Middle of the morning
Catch a raven's eye
Middle of the night
Catch a snake eye
Bitten with no warning cry
Catch a needle eye
Middle of nowhere

Yeah your young eyes see so far
No you can’t help who you are
So don’t ever be held captive by tomorrow

I can’t help but take a stand
I’m a sentimental man
And I will not be a victim of the sorrow

No I can’t help who I am

But I still believe in us all
But I still believe in us
All right, all right
But I still believe in us all
But I still believe in us
All right, all right

And I wonder how that felt today?
And I wonder how that felt today? Yeah
And I wonder how that felt today?
And I wonder how that felt today? Yeah
