about

I wrote this song in Brooklyn when I was renting this really nice studio space. I wrote a lot of stuff in this little, isolated room. This is another one we just recreated note for note from my demo and used a lot of the tracks from the original demo recording...

Lyrically it's about what feels like an inevitable end to the American empire and a kind of apocalyptic, world changing shift in life as we know it. It feels like with the rise of Trump, the alt-right, main stream conspiracy theories, anti-science, the welcoming of marshall law to destroy the "left" that this song has become more depressing and real in the 3 years or so since I wrote it. Sinking ships can take no orders kinda sums it up.

Vibe wise I was going for a Beach Boys/Zombies thing. We didn't really try and change that. So it always sorta stuck out as not really a Born Ruffians thing. But I think Squeeze embraces all those elements of our song writing.

lyrics

Promise me now at the end of your life
You will watch the rising sun
One last time, just for fun
Yeah

Long time, I know
My oh my
How time goes by the wayside of your ship
As it sinks
Slowly slips into

It’s taking over
Can’t blame no other

Why will you not test the waters
Sinking ships can take no orders

Promise me now at the end of your life
You will watch the rising sun
One last time, just for fun
Yeah

Long time, I know
My oh my, how time goes by the wayside of your ship
As it sinks
Slowly slips into the sea

It’s taking over
Can’t blame no other

Why will you not test the waters
Sinking ships can take no orders

Come to me
I’m sinking
Sinking
Sinking
